Did you know?

Dehydration is dangerous, so check the colour of your urine. If it’s dark yellow, you need to drink more.

Think about a drink

Water is much more important than food to your prospects of survival. Get collecting and make it safe.

Build a water filter
Dehydration leads to headaches, nausea and dizziness. Water is vital for your survival, but you can’t just drink any old dregs you find without treating them.

First, you’ll need to build a water filter. Make a tripod from branches, tied together with ivy or string. Then, take three pieces of cloth and tie them between the branches in three layers (as shown in the photo). You’ll need to leave a few inches of space between each layer.

Top layer: moss. It holds on to rainwater after everything else is dry. You’ll find it growing on trees – put a few handfuls in the top layer.

Middle layer: stones. Water drips through the moss and then through the stones. These filter out twigs, leaves and other impurities.

Bottom layer: bare material. The fine cloth acts as one final strainer that removes small insects and other creepy crawlies.

Base level: dirty water. The water that collects here is not OK to drink yet. You’ll need to purify it first.
